MILITARY FAMILIES SPEAK OUT RESPONDS TO SENATE VOTE TO CONTINUE FUNDING FOR IRAQ WAR
Today, Military Families Speak Out, the largest organization of military families speaking out against a war in the history of the United States, issued the following statement in response to the vote in the U.S. Senate to provide continued funding for the Iraq war:
“The Senate has now joined the U.S. House of Representatives in abandoning our troops by passing legislation that will provide funding for a continued U.S. military occupation of Iraq.
MILITARY AND GOLD STAR FAMILIES, IRAQ WAR VETS, ACTIVE DUTY TROOPS, AND VETERANS OF OTHER WARS TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE ON CAPITOL HILL ON 4th ANNIVERSARY OF IRAQ WAR
Message to Congress: Stop Abandoning Our Troops De-fund the War, Bring Them Home Now, and Take Care of Them When They Get Here!
On the 4th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, members of Military Families Speak Out (MFSO), the Appeal for Redress, Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), Veterans For Peace (VFP) will hold a press conference at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 19th on the Cannon House Office Building Terrace, detailing the many ways in which U.S. troops have been abandoned by the Bush Administration and by Congress, and calling on Members of Congress to support our troops by voting against the House Supplemental Appropriations bill and end the funding that allows the war in Iraq to continue.
MILITARY FAMILIES OPPOSE HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP PLAN FOR IRAQ
March 8th, 2007
Washington D.C., March 8, 2007 – Military Families Speak Out (MFSO), an organization of over 3,200 military families who are opposed to the war in Iraq, expressed dismay and outrage at the plan unveiled by House Democrats today that would delay the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops until the fall of 2008.
“The Iraq plan presented by Nancy Pelosi today condemns at least 1,500 more U.S. troops and countless Iraqi children, women, and men to die in a war based on lies, a war that has already taken far too many lives,” said Nancy Lessin, co-founder of MFSO.
MILITARY FAMILIES CHALLENGE CONGRESS:
If You Don’t De-fund the War, You Are Abandoning Our Troops
Today, as the House debates a non-binding resolution on the President’s proposed escalation of the war, Military Families Speak Out (MFSO) delivered an open letter to all Senators and Members of Congress challenging the prevailing logic that de-funding the Iraq War means de-funding or abandoning our troops in the field. The letter is signed by over 200 members of MFSO with loved ones currently in Iraq or soon to be deployed. Click here to download a copy of the letter with over 200 signatures.
MILITARY FAMILIES FROM 31 STATES PARTICIPATE IN MARCH ON WASHINGTON, ASK CONGRESS TO DEFUND WAR
January 27th, 2007
Over 150 military families, members of Military Families Speak Out, gathered in Washington DC for the national march and rally organized by United for Peace and Justice. Military families called on Congress to vote against the upcoming appropriation request that would allow the war in Iraq to continue. Military Families Speak Out (MFSO), an organization of over 3,200 military families who are opposed to the war in Iraq, is the largest organization of military families opposing a war in the history of the United States.
MILITARY FAMILIES AVAILABLE TO RESPOND TO PRESIDENT BUSH’S SPEECH OUTLINING HIS NEW COURSE IN IRAQ
Members of Military Families Speak Out (MFSO), an organization of over 3,100 military families who are opposed to the war in Iraq, are available to comment on President Bush’s new course for Iraq. Many of these families expect that their loved ones can or will be affected by any escalation in troop strength in Iraq, either because they will be extended beyond their scheduled return date or because they will be deployed early.
“As politicians in Washington, DC, including President Bush, scramble for ways to extract themselves from the political fallout of the war in Iraq, they are doing the unconscionable: gambling in a no-win situation with the lives of our loved ones and the loved ones of others,” said Nancy Lessin, a co-founder of Military Families Speak Out. “It is incumbent upon Congress to now use their power of the purse to stop funding for continuing the U.S. military occupation of Iraq and use the funds necessary to bring our troops home quickly and safely.”
MILITARY FAMILIES DELIVER LETTER TO INCOMING CONGRESS: SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, DE-FUND THE WAR IN IRAQ
January 4, 2007, Washington DC – Members of Military Families Speak Out (MFSO), the largest organization of military families speaking out against a war in the history of the U.S., will be delivering letters and photos to the incoming members of the 110th Congress as they take office on Thursday, January 4th with a single message: Support Our Troops – De-Fund The War. Military families will be specifically asking Congress to de-fund the war by voting against the upcoming appropriation bill that is expected to be considered in February or March. The letter that will be delivered to Senators and Members of Congress expresses the urgency of ending the war: “Each day that the war in Iraq continues, on average, three or more U.S. troops and countless Iraqi children, women and men are killed.”
EMPTY CHAIRS AT THE HOLIDAY TABLES OF MILITARY FAMILIES
Military Families Speak Out (MFSO), a national organization of over 3,100 families opposed to the war in Iraq who have relatives or loved ones in the military, has members across the country who are suffering this holiday season with pain, tears and fear rather than holiday cheer. As the Bush administration and Congress engage in a seemingly endless debate about how to make the war in Iraq “go better”, the number of U.S. troop deaths is approaching the next horrific milestone of 3,000.
MILITARY FAMILIES CHALLENGE IRAQ STUDY GROUP REPORT AS “THE WAY SIDEWAYS,” PAVING THE WAY FOR LONG-TERM U.S. MILITARY PRESENCE IN IRAQ
December 6th, 2006
Washington D.C., December 6, 2006 – Military Families Speak Out (MFSO), a nonpartisan organization of over 3,100 military families who are opposed to the war in Iraq, faults the Iraq Study Group report released today as being about "The Way Sideways," rather than "The Way Forward." The three basic recommendations of the report - step up diplomatic efforts with other nations in the region, talk tough to the Iraq government to get them to 'step up to the plate', and withdraw some U.S. combat troops but leave a significant number of troops in Iraq to provide training, logistical and rapid response capabilities - will not end the war in Iraq. Alaska Military Families Respond to Senator Murkowski’s Press Release Expressing Gratitude to Secretary Rumsfeld Families tell Murkowski: “No Gratitude to Rumsfeld for Promises on top of Broken Promises”
On October 2, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (AK) issued a press release expressing her gratitude to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Army Secretary Francis Harvey for committing to bringing the 172nd back from Iraq at the end of their 120 day extension.
On October 23, members of Military Families Speak Out (MFSO) Alaska sent a reply to Senator Murkowski in an open letter saying that a commitment to bring back the troops at the end of a 120 day extension is no cause for celebration. “In our opinion, Donald Rumsfeld is undeserving of any sort of gratitude. Our loved ones are still on the front lines in an October that may soon prove to be the deadliest month in Iraq for American soldiers in two years. And the civilian death toll continues to soar. When does Congress plan to hold this administration accountable for the truth that their war was and still is a total failure?” said Rich Moniak a member of Military Families Speak Out from Juneau, Alaska.

July 28th, 2006
Members of the 172nd Stryker Brigade were returning home, and Jennifer Davis, a member of Military Families Speak Out from Anchorage, Alaska, was preparing for her husband’s homecoming. He had served almost one year in Iraq. She just received a call she never expected. "My husband called to let me know in the best way that he knew how, that the Army was extending his deployment four more months, mere hours before he was to board a flight home," said Ms. Davis. "I am totally frustrated, disappointed and heart broken. Just when I thought we were going to be able to resume a ‘normal’ life. Just when I thought the nightmare was over, it was extended..... This war should never have started, and now I’m left wondering if it will ever end.

Operation House Call, a summer-long campaign to highlight the damage caused by the Iraq War, will bring military families from across the United States to Washington, D.C. to highlight the growing toll of the Iraq war and to tell Congress to bring our troops home now and take care of them when they get here. “Every day that Congress fails to act to end this war, an average of two U.S. troops and countless Iraqi children, women and men are dying,” said Stacy Bannerman of Kent, Washington whose husband served in the Iraq with the Washington Army National Guard and faces possible re-deployment. “Congress should be ashamed of their political posturing and mock debates, as our loved ones and the people of Iraq continue to be maimed and die in a war that should never have happened.” Download a copy of the press release.

Military Families to Have Christmas Dinner in Front of
Senator Dianne Feinstein’s House; Call to Bring Troops Home Now
December 24th, 2005
SAN FRANSISCO, CA - While Senator Dianne Feinstein and many Americans sit down to enjoy holiday dinner with their loved ones this year, many military families are eating at tables with empty chairs. Military Families Speak Out members view those empty seats at the holiday table as a testament to the unrelenting and unfair burden which this war based on lies has placed upon military families and their loved ones. Some of their loved ones have died in Iraq and will never return. For other families, their loved ones are in harm’s way, thousands of miles away this holiday season. For still other families, loved ones have returned home as hollow eyed strangers, suffering from psychological wounds of this war that they will carry for the rest of their lives.

Kenneth Ballard was not killed in action as had been reported. The Army disclosed on Saturday that Ballard, 26, actually died of wounds from the accidental discharge of a M240 machine gun on his tank after his platoon had returned from battling insurgents in Najaf. An Army spokesman, Col. Joseph Curtin, said in an interview that separate investigations concluded only days after Ballard's death that it was an accident.

IRAQ WAR VETERANS, MILITARY FAMILIES, OTHERS PROTEST BUSH APPEARANCE AT FT. BRAGG and SAY:
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS – BRING THEM HOME NOW
AND TAKE CARE OF THEM WHEN THEY GET HERE!
June 27th, 2005
FAYETTEVILLE, NC – On Tuesday, June 28th, President Bush will be appearing at Ft.
Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to try to resuscitate the flagging support for the
war in Iraq. Iraq War Veterans, military families, veterans of previous wars, and others
who oppose the war in Iraq will be in Fayetteville to protest President Bush’s captiveaudience
photo opportunity and challenge the false picture of the war being portrayed by
the White House. The Bush visit comes in the wake of a local (Fayetteville) newspaper
poll showing that over forty percent of local residents are not in favor of the war, while
national polls show that 52% of the US population want troops withdrawn and 60%
believe the war in Iraq is not worth fighting.
Military Families Speak Out About Recruiting Practices:
Families say “Examine the Real Problem -
Call for A Stand-Down on the War in Iraq!”
May 20th, 2005
WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Friday, May 20, 2005 the Army is holding a one-day nationwide
halt to recruiting, to allow reflection on proper recruiting practices and on how to ensure
recruiters are using ethical methods of recruiting. Military families with loved ones who have
been recruited, and who have served or are serving in Iraq, or who have died as a result of
the war in Iraq, say the Army's public relations activities of May 20th will not solve the
problem of illegal, immoral and unethical recruiting practices. The fundamental problem is
that recruiters are required to sign up new recruits for an illegal, immoral and unethical war
that is itself based on lies. The Army's 'stand-down' will focus attention on a 'few bad apple'
recruiters and, if anything, a need for 'more training.' But recruiters have been given the job
of selling a bad product, and are being placed under intense pressure to increase their
sales. Bad recruiting practices are the inevitable result. Instead of playing PR games,
Military Families Speak Out calls on the Army, the other branches of the military, the Bush
Administration and Congress to call a stand-down on the war.

On the Occasion of the 1,500th U.S. Troop Death in Iraq,
Military Families Mourn and Speak Out:
How Many More Will Die in a War Based on Lies?
Honor the Fallen, and Bring the Troops Home NOW!
February 28th, 2005
WASHINGTON, DC – As a suicide bomb in Hilla, Iraq takes the lives of over 100 Iraqis, and an average
of two U.S. soldiers are killed each day, we are on the eve of two tragic milestones: the 1,500th troop
death in Iraq, and March 19, 2005, the second anniversary of a war that should never have happened.
Military Families Speak Out honors all who have fallen - US service men and women, and Iraqi men,
women and children -- who have all died in a war that is neither just nor justifiable. Despite all the
“banner days” that were supposed to mark turning points in this war, the violence continues and
escalates. The U.S. occupation of Iraq continues to be the problem, not the solution.
Vermont Military Families Speak Out
In Support of March 1st Town Meeting Resolutions calling for:
Withdrawal of Troops from Iraq and
Hearings on Impact of National Guard Deployments
February 28th, 2005
BOSTON, MA – On Tuesday March 1st, town meetings across Vermont will discuss resolutions calling for the
withdrawal of U.S. military from Iraq and the provision of humanitarian assistance to Iraq. They further call on the
Vermont Legislature to set up a commission to study impacts of National Guard deployments on soldiers, families,
communities and the state. These resolutions were initiated by a coalition of groups in Vermont that includes
Vermont Military Families Speak Out – a group of families with loved ones in the military, including the Vermont
National Guard. The resolutions point to the erroneous claims that were used to take the U.S. into this war. They
also point to the substantial costs of the deployment of the Vermont National Guard, including deaths, injuries and
trauma for the troops, as well as hardships on families and employers. Vermont communities have been placed at
risk due to the deployment of essential public safety personnel. Extended deployments in a war that should never
have been fought leave Vermont without its full contingent of troops in times of emergency or natural disaster and
also threaten the long-term viability of the Vermont National Guard as enlistment and re-enlistment rates decline.

will participate in the Memorial Procession.
National Guard Families Confront Bush Policies
at Press Conference
as President Speaks to National Guard Association in Las Vegas
September 14th, 2004
(Las Vegas, NV)—Hours before President Bush gives a speech at the convention of the
National Guard Association of the United States in Las Vegas, families whose loved ones are
in the National Guard in Iraq, have served in Iraq or have been killed in Iraq will speak at a
news conference in Las Vegas. As mounting questions about Bush’s own service in the
National Guard continue, several military families will tell their stories and confront the
administration for its betrayal of National Guard soldiers who signed up to “stay at home and
serve their country” but were sent overseas to fight a war based on lies.
Families of Iraq War Casualties Speak Out
April 29th, 2004
WASHINGTON, DC – One year ago, on May 1, 2003, President Bush declared an end to
major combat in Iraq. Since then, as the toll of this war has grown, its human cost has been
hidden from the American public. Coffins coming in to Dover Air Force Base are banned
from public view, and until recently, images of war and death itself were rare. Last week,
photographs of flag-draped coffins appeared in the media and on the internet. On Friday
night April 30, “Nightline” will feature Ted Koppel reading the names of American service
men and women who were killed in hostile action between March 20, 2003 and April 30,
2004. As he reads the names, their pictures will appear on the screen.

Texas Military Families Demand an End to Occupation
Military Families to Speak Out in the Heart of Bush Country
November 5th, 2003
SAN ANTONIO, TX - Military Families from across the state will hold a press conference Saturday,
November 8th in San Antonio demanding an end to the US Occupation of Iraq and the
immediate return of all troops to their home duty stations. San Antonio, home to 4 active military
bases, has citizens and military families who want America to know that even in Bush’s backyard,
opposition is strong and growing against the deceit and failed policies that have placed Americans
and Iraqis in such a deadly situation. The “Patriotism For Profit” agenda by the Bush Administration
that promotes the occupation of Iraq has only served to obscure the truth that our military, and our
families are being used for political and economic reasons, not liberation.
Military Families to Join Thousands
in National Protest of US Occupation of Iraq
October 15th, 2003

George Bush the faces of the men and women he is putting in imminent danger day after day.
“George Bush said, “Bring ‘em on!” but we say BRING THEM HOME!” said Nancy Lessin, cofounder
of Military Families Speak Out, one of the organizations launching ‘Bring Them Home Now’.
